Acclimate Your Pet

If your pet has never used an automatic feeder before or is nervous about new devices, use the steps below to help them adjust to the PetSafe® FreshFeed Refrigerated Pet Feeder.

Start with the feeder unplugged.
Place your pet’s meal in the first compartment with the feeder unplugged so that it is powered off. You can also remove the lid at first, so your pet can explore the feeder without any movement or sounds.

  • If your pet is nervous to approach the feeder even with it unplugged, try feeding them from just the food tray or stainless steel insert first.

Plug in the feeder, but wait to set a schedule.
Once your pet is comfortable eating from the bowl, plug in the feeder. Do not set a schedule yet. Allow your pet more time to eat from the feeder while it remains stationary.

Stay nearby for the first rotation.
Set a schedule or use the Feed button in the app. Stay with your pet while the feeder rotates and reassure them.

  • If your pet is timid or cautious, consider turning the beep off at first.
  • Once your pet is used to the rotation, you can turn the beep back on to help signal mealtimes.

Allow time for your pet to accept the food temperature.
While the feeder does defrost for a moment before the feeding, some pets prefer to wait a short time before eating to allow the food some time to be less chilled. This behavior is normal, and every pet is different.
